Intensifying Summer Storms: Warning Signs from a Changing Climate

Summer storms are a phenomenon that commonly occurs during Thailand's late hot season, characterized by thunderstorms, strong gusts of wind, and in some areas, hail. They typically occur between March and May. However, today's weather is becoming increasingly erratic, causing storms to trend more severe and potentially create wider impacts across certain areas.

This phenomenon is caused by differences in temperature and atmospheric pressure between warm air masses near the Earth's surface and cold air masses at higher altitudes. When hot air rises rapidly, water vapor condenses and forms large cumulonimbus clouds, which are responsible for heavy rainfall in short periods, strong wind gusts, lightning, and hail — particularly during periods of high surface temperatures, which further promote the development of more intense storms.

At the global level, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2021) states that the Earth's average temperature has risen due to climate change driven by human activities, enabling the atmosphere to retain more water vapor. This is associated with an increase in extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall across multiple regions. While summer storms in Thailand are not directly specified, these findings reflect a broader trend of intensifying weather events in many regions, which may be linked to more severe thunderstorms in certain areas.
