1,000,000 Plastic Bags Used Every Single Minute — But They Take Hundreds of Years to Break Down‼️

Plastic waste remains one of the key drivers of global warming. Every minute, more than 1 million plastic bags are used around the world — yet each one can take over 500 years to decompose naturally, depending on the type of plastic and the conditions it ends up in.

And plastic doesn't truly break down the way food scraps or fallen leaves do. Instead, it deteriorates and fragments into smaller and smaller pieces — and even then, what remains doesn't disappear. It persists as microplastics that seep into ecosystems, contaminate food chains, and inevitably harm the health of humans and other living things across the planet.

The sheer volume of plastic bag consumption doesn't just create a pollution problem — inefficient waste management means plastic is frequently disposed of through open burning, releasing greenhouse gases and toxic substances directly into the atmosphere.

Thailand, however, remains committed to tackling this systematically. Policies to reduce single-use plastic bags in department stores and convenience stores have successfully cut plastic waste at the source by tens of billions of bags over just the past few years — a meaningful step toward a circular economy that reduces dependence on virgin resources and cuts emissions from plastic production.

But the most critical gear in this entire system is a shift in everyday behavior: refusing plastic bags, bringing reusable bags, carrying a personal water bottle. These are the small starting points of lasting change — and it all begins with shifting attitudes before taking action.
