The natural resources of Khon Kaen province
Thailand has discovered the fossilized bones of a dinosaur named "Phuwiangosaurus Sirindhornae," estimated to be 130 million years old. This discovery marks the first instance of a dinosaur excavation at Phu Pratu Ti in Phu Wiang District, Khon Kaen Province. The dinosaur remains consist of large leg bones belonging to a plant-eating sauropod with a long neck, tail, and four legs. They were excavated from pit sites 1 to 3 in Phu Wiang, buried in layers of red-colored sandstone with some parts of limestone. The rock type falls under the Khao Khwao Group of the Khorat Plateau from the early Cretaceous period. Upon comparative study with dinosaur fossils from various global sources, it was identified as a new genus of plant-eating sauropod named "Phuwiangosaurus Sirindhornae," the first discovered in Thailand and globally.
